Jacquelyn Bischak is a lifelong artist. She received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree majoring in Life Drawing and Painting from Eastern Michigan University. A large portion of her career has been spent working in advertising, most recently at Leo Burnett. She began painting the figure professionally in 2007 and entered her first national fine art competition. Shortly ofter, she began showing her work with the Legacy Galleries..
"I have worked in a number of mediums and genres, but my most cherished is figurative. Learning to paint the human form in oil has been an amazing journey. No other medium is so well suited for capturing human emotion and giving inspiration. I will continue to focus on figurative painting; working to improve my technique so that I speak clearly, and simply capture moments of beauty, thought, and unity."
Jacquelyn admires and studies the dark, realistic and direct style of American artists, Joseph De Camp and Celia Beaux. As well as contemporary artist, Richard Schmid, Glenn Harrington, and Nancy Guzik. She has studied the paintings of the masters in museums, galleries and private collections; which is the primary influence of her unique style of representational art.
Recently, Jacquelyn received the 2010 Oil Painters Of American "Dorothey Driehaus Fellowship Award for her painting "Reverie". She has won National FAV Awards from master painters Nancy Guzik, Jeremy Lipking and fine art critic Clint Watson.
"With superb drawing, edges and values, Jacquelyn creates a sensitivity that stops time.""What a joy, a powerful joy your creations give me!" - Nancy Guzik
Jacquelyn lives on the northern shores of Lake Michigan near Traverse City, with her husband, architect Mark Bischak and their daughter Tatiana. Her studio overlooks the orchards of the Joyfield Valley. Figurative art connects the classical to the contemporary, emotions to technique, and the memory of a moment to timeless beauty. In celebration of this highly sought after genre, Waterhouse Gallery marks its 25th anniversary with an exhibition of works by some of the nation's top figurative artist.
Artists participating in the Great American Figurative Exhibition include Dan Beck, Kevin Beifuss, Jacquelyn Bischak, Ellie Cedrone, Ray Hunter, Jeremy Lipking, Joseph Todorovitch, Romel de la Torre, Vincent Giarrano, Adrian Gottleib, Ignat Ignatov, Susan Lyons, Michael Malm, C.W. Mundy, Pino, Burton Silverman and Benjamin Wu.

"The show is a stunning collection of the nation's top
figurative painters. These paintings are a visual feast."

"Other artist in the area are eager to gather for seeing and learning from the masters of their mediums. Artist fortunate enough to be included in the show enjoy the work and learn from each other." says Hunter. "It is an honor to be included with these masterful painters."
CW Mundy is motivated by the challenges of painting; appreciating the many ways that exist to paint a painting. "Simply stated, I love being on beautiful beaches and breathing ocean air. And artistically, I am inspired by the Edward Potthas paintings of 100 years ago of figures at the beach," says Mundy. "I want to capture the impression of a scene and not the totality. I would like the viewer to see joy and harmony."
Benjamin Wu will be displaying two nudes and a portrait in this exhibition, favoring figurative work over most other genres. "I'm often inspired by simple and casual posture that can make a composition look interesting and aesthetically pleasing," say Wu. "by experimenting with different shapes, lighting, colors, compositions, contrasts, and even the interactions between figures, I can explore the boundaries of beauty. That is my motivation to paint."
Jacquelyn Bischak's daughter Tatiana is an endless source of inspiration for the artist. Bischak says the painting Reverie, with her daughter as the model, is "the essence of two visions that contemplated over the long winter. "A pair of my favorite Dogwood trees in full bloom have always amazed me with their whimsical flowers, " say Bischak. "It's been our custom to take early morning walks together, Tatiana and I. The sleep and dreamy quality were still very fresh on her face. I could not help but ask her to stand there while I tried to capture that moment as quickly as possible."
Vincent Giarrano's objective for this exhibit was to create a series of genre paintings, in particular, scenes that feel like real life experiences. "I like the viewer to feel that they are seeing something hidden and beautiful, a quiet moment in someone's life that is undisturbed by our observation." says Giarroano. "It's at times like this when a person show a very different side of themselves, unguarded and sincere. I also like a little mystery, so I avoid making too much of an obvious statement in my work.
Hillsdale College's Department of Fine Arts hosted the 2009 Portraits in Michigan invitational & Juried Exhibition. The painting invitational featured portrait artists from around the Great Lakes State, Including Harry Ahn, Jacquelyn Bischak, Connie Kuhnied, Elahe Crocket, Bud Gates, Ken Cadwallader and Fred Petroskey. Dr. Samuel Knecht, Director of Arts for Hillsdale College began the event with a lecture regarding the revival of Traditional Realism in the United States. Artists enjoyed a formal reception and mingle with collectors and students. Carl J. Samson, former president of the Portraits Society of American and winner of the Butler Institute of American's Desmend Award, juried this Professional Artists Series which included a formal public critique. The critique was an exciting and educational addition to this years event. Not only did artists benefit from Samson's expertise's in the area of figurative painting, the public was able to gain knowledge regarding the components of great paintings in todays fine art market. Carl Samson's most recent painting "At The Mirror" was on display during the exhibit.
Hillsdale College is dedicated to formal Traditional Fine Art training and furthering of the Traditional Realist movement in the United States and worldwide. The exhibit runs September 12 - October 3rd at the Sage Creek Center Gallery at Hillsdale College, located in Hillsdale, Michigan.
